BJP launches two TV ad campaigns for Lok Sabha polls.

The BJP on Monday launched two television advertisements as part of its campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls. The two one-minute advertisements are song-based and created by a private ad company for the saffron party. "The two campaigns are different. One is regarding Congress misrule and the second one is about a better tomorrow. The ads will be on air on all the major national network channels from tomorrow," party spokesperson Sidharth Nath Singh said.


Dismantle terrorist infrastructure on Pak soil: BJP .

The BJP on Monday called for dismantling terrorist infrastructure on Pakistani soil in the wake of the day's terrorists' attack on a police training centre near Wagah border in Lahore which killed 20 policemen. "Dismantling terrorist infrastructure on the side of Pakistan is the urgent need of the hour", senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said during a press meet.


CPI(M) justifies invoking of NSA against Varun.

Justifying invoking of NSA against BJP leader Varun Gandhi, the CPI(M) on Monday said that "tough message needed to be sent.... and it has been sent". "A very strong.... tough message needed to be sent that no hate speech will be tolerated against any community and it has been sent," party Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat told reporters here when asked whether the use of NSA against Mr. Gandhi was appropriate.


Three arrested for killing house maid in Delhi.

Overhearing the plans of four youths to rob her employer's residence cost a domestic help her life in south Delhi, police said on Monday. Rambeti (50) was strangled in the Green Park residence of Indu Jain on March 28 allegedly by four persons, including a former domestic help who was seeking re-employment, after she overheard them planning a robbery in the house. She was employed there only on last Thursday after her son, who is working as a driver of one of the Jains' relatives, recommended her name. Three persons -- Keertan (19), the former domestic help, Inderjit (19) and Roshan (20) -- were arrested while one of their accomplices is absconding, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday said that in senior leader Capt Kanwaljit Singh's death, "the backbone of the Akalis had been lost". "It's a great setback for the Shiromani Akali Dal. Kanwaljit was our backbone and losing him is a terrible loss for us. His tragic death is also a big loss for Punjab as a whole," Mr. Badal said here on Monday.


Govt. approves Vote on Account for Meghalaya for April-July.

With Meghalaya under President's rule, the Union Cabinet on Monday approved Rs 1,540.87 crore Vote on Account for the State for the first four months of the next fiscal. The Cabinet also gave nod to Rs 215.26 crore supplementary demand for grants during the current fiscal for Meghalaya. Two ordinances will be issued in this regard after receipt of assent by President Pratibha Patil, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the cabinet meeting.


Main accused in railway station shootout arrested.

Varanasi: Police has arrested the main accused in Saturday's shootout near the Cantonment Railway Station parcel office here in which four people were injured. Vikas Nigam was arrested last night when Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel raided the circulating area at GT Road after getting a tip-off from Ashok Kharwar, another accused, who was nabbed on the spot, GRP sources said.


Varun's bail plea to be heard inside district jail.

The bail application of BJP Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi, who has been booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), will be heard by a judge inside the district jail here in the wake of apprehensions on the law and order front, officials sources said on Monday. Chief Judicial Magistrate Vipin Kumar has been asked by the District Judge to go to the jail to hear Varun's bail plea, they said. 29-year-old Varun will not be taken to the regular court premises as the district administration has apprehensions on the law and order front, they said.


UP govt. cracks whip on college ragging, issues blanket ban.

Warning stringent action against those students indulging in ragging at educational institutes, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued an order completely banning the menace. "The government order (GO) completely bans ragging in educational institutes. Those found involved in this will be expelled from college," Principal Secretary, Higher Education Kamran Rizvi said here. Educational institutes have been asked to mention in their prospectus about the anti-ragging provisions available, the official said.

Jharkhand's finance department has stayed the decision by the governor's advisory committee to hike the dearness allowance (DA) of government employees after the Election Commission raised objections to the move announced after model code of conduct came into operation.


J&K plans compensation to victim's kin

Jammu and Kashmir government will pay Rs 4 lakh each as compensation to the next kin of victims of militancy in lieu of appointment in government services. District Magistrate Bandipora M S Sood said Rs 4 lakh as compensation in lieu of government jobs will be provided to those civilians in the families, whose bread earners were killed in militancy.


India won't sign CTBT in present form.

India today maintained that it would not sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in its present form but would not stand in the way of the pact. "Our position is the same," Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told reporters here when asked whether India would be signing the CTBT considering the US' fresh efforts to push the treaty that has been hanging fire for over a decade.


India asks Lanka to take steps towards 'credible devolution'.

With military operation against LTTE appearing to near an end, India has asked Sri Lanka to take steps towards "credible devolution" of powers to Tamil-dominated northern region. The message was conveyed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Principal Secretary T K A Nair, who recently visited Sri Lanka.
